In the text of Lord of the Rings, when Gandalf confronts Bilbo after his “trick” at the birthday party it’s suggested that he had visited The Shire on a number of occasions to, as Bilbo puts it, “badger” him, specifically about the story of his finding the ring in Gollum’s cave… this is meant to depict one of those moments…
